Home Economics at Rockhampton State High School provides students with practical life skills, creativity and knowledge that supports healthy, independent and informed decision making. Our state of the art facilities including an industrial kitchen, cafe and junior kitchen offer students valuable opportunities to develop and refine their culinary skills in a real-world learning environment.
All Year 8 students study Home Economics for one term, gaining foundational skills in nutrition, food preparation and healthy living. From Year 9 onwards, Home Economics subjects are offered as year-long electives, allowing students to develop their knowledge and practical skills.
Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, students explore food and nutrition, develop practical cookery skills and learn to make informed choices that promote health and wellbeing. They apply a variety of techniques and processes, evaluate their work and the work of others, and build confidence through practical activities and real-world applications.
Students can choose from a range of senior Home Economics pathways, including:
- Food and Nutrition (General)
- Hospitality Practices (Applied)
- Certificate II in Hospitality (VET)
- Early Childhood Studies
These subjects provide valuable preparation for further study, training and careers in hospitality, nutrition, health, education, childcare and a range of service industries.
Home Economics empowers students with practical skills for everyday life while opening pathways to exciting future opportunities.
