Rockhampton State High School provides opportunities for studies in Health and Physical education at every year level.
All Year 7 and 8 students participate in mandatory Foundation Health and Physical education in semester 1 or 2, where they learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and participate in a variety of physical activities including a range of Invasion, Court, Fielding and Target games.
In Year 9, all students study Foundation HPE in semester 1, and have the option of choosing a full year elective – Creative Sports providing they achieve success in the year 8 programme. The Creative Sports unit encourages a more in – depth study of a wide variety of sports. This unit is considered an imperative introduction to the demands of Senior Physical Education and Health Education subjects.
Year 10 students study the mandated Foundation unit during semester 2. They still have the yearlong elective option of studying Specialist Sports Performance, providing they have been successful in the year 9 programme. The Specialist Sports Performance unit further enhances the extension curriculum of the Creative Sports Unit, also an integral element of study to prepare students for the written and physical demands of senior curriculum.
In the senior school, students also have a variety of Health and Physical Education choices:
- Year 11 and 12 Physical Education – General subject
- Year 11 and 12 Health Education – General subject
- Year 11 and 12 Sport and Recreation – Applied subject
- Certificate II in Sport and Recreation – VET accreditation
These subjects both prepare students for healthy and active lifestyles, whilst also providing pathways to careers and links to further training and/or tertiary studies. They provide avenues for students to learn in, through and about physical education and sports, and provide an active outlet for students who enjoy a hands on approach to learning.
